When I upgraded my windows 8 installation to windows 8.1 using the free upgrade through the windows app store I got a strange error when opening VMWare player:
The network bridge on device VMNet0 is not running. The virtual machine will not be able to communicate with the host or the other machines on your network.
Failed to connect virtual device
After some troubleshooting with the network adapters in VMWare Player I decided to reinstall. This fixed the problem, it turns out something happens to the virtual network adapter for VMWare after the upgrade to windows 8.1.
So if you get this error after the upgrade just re-install VMWare Player. All of your virtual machines will remain in tact and you will not have to do anything else.
